Cross Scott was test-driving a customer’s car when he noticed a car was pulled over, its lights flashing. He got out to examine the car. There was a woman inside who passed out. And the car rolled forward. He stuck a rock under the wheel and used another to hit a window. Two women who pulled over dialed 911.
He checked for a pulse (脉搏). Nothing. He had to act, but there was one problem. Scott had never prepared himself for CPR (心肺复苏术) in his life. Well, that’s not completely true. He had seen Season 5, episode (集) 14 of The Office.
In a classic scene from the American TV series, the manager at Dunder Mifflin realizes his leadership style may lead to a heart attack. And fearing future emergencies (紧急事件), he organizes CPR training for his workers. When he pushes too fast on the chest of the model, the teacher tells him to match his rhythm (节奏) to a well-known disco hit ----Stayin’Alive by Bee Gees. At around 100 beats a minute, it matches the correct speed for pushing on the chest of the patient.
Scott remembered the show. He began pushing while singing the song aloud. The woman, named Clare, awoke after a minute and threw up. She was then taken to hospital.
“Scott appears to have done the right thing without training in CPR,” said Jonathan Epstein, the senior director of science at the American Red Cross training services. “And popular culture moments have helped,” Epstein said. He then told how he once reacted to a mother giving CPR to her unresponsive 5-month-old. She used fingertips instead of hands and provided air by using her mouth to cover the child’s nose and mouth. The form was perfect. How did she learn how to do that? “Oprah Show,” she said, Epstein recalled.
  1. What did Scott learn to do by watching an episode of The Office?
A. React to an emergency situation.
B. Give others a short CPR course.
C. Find out whether a person is in danger.
