Knowing from your letter that you are learning Chinese this semester, I am more than pleased to provide you with some advice on how to acquire a good knowledge of Chinese.
To begin with, there is no better way to learn a language well than to listen attentively to your teacher in class and constantly practise after class as mastering a language does require a great deal of practice. Besides, I think it beneficial if you read as much as possible, which contributes a lot to enlarging your vocabulary. Finally, you can gain idiomatic Chinese through movies and songs.
